Myths and facts about Bikes
We have all heard the superstition “If a Black Cat crosses your path it is unlucky”, many people believe it and many do not but the myth keeps on repeating itself and keeps on moving from one generation to the another. Similarly, many facts are misunderstood and spread by a non-biker or people who got caught in some minor accidents.
Let's look at the Myth and facts related to bikes:
1. Any one below the legal age can ride a bike:
The myth starts when you are allowed to ride a bicycle on any path, road, ground…etc. The major difference between a bicycle and a bike is that a bike has a MOTOR or an ENGINE mechanism attached to the movement which can cause major problems if not handled with care.
2. I Am Pretty Good at Riding; I Don’t Need a Helmet:
A simple idea is that if it is compulsory for people to wear a helmet for riding a bicycle then there is a reason behind it and it is known as SAFETY. Many factors are not in the control or favor of the rider, even a small damage to your brain can cause major problems in your life. Wearing a helmet while riding a Bike is more important than wearing an underwear. Prevention is better than cure, there are a lot of studies and research done on this topic and the results obviously favor people who wear helmets.
3. Full face helmet cause major distraction:
Believed by many that helmet causes distraction and improper concentration while riding, many do not consider the fact that helmets stop huge particles which fly in the air to come in contact with eyes. The primary reason why helmets are mandatory is because it saves life. It protects the most important part of a human body the head.
4. Expensive bikes are better:
All manufacturers implement a safety mechanism and get their bike tested in accidental conditions and research for improvement of the safety mechanism to be implemented on the bike. Although there is no correlation between being best to the cost of a bike compared, it is wise to be careful when purchasing a certain type of bikes. The pickup is good when you know to control it and can be fatal if you are unable to control it at a very key time of your journey which may result in a life or death situation. It is advised to ride slow or maintain an average speed irrespective of the bike you are riding.
5. Synthetic/high quality oils make no difference to an old engine:
You cannot save any money when it comes to Oils either you buy an expensive oil or spend an equivalent money on maintenance. Synthetic oil are beneficial for engines which have long pauses between each ride, ex. If your bike stands for 10 to 15 days without someone riding it can lead to high cost on the maintenance. The characteristic of a synthetic and high quality oil is to stick to the gears and crucial part of the engine leaving the worry about getting the engine jammed due to drying up.
6. Racing/sports tire are faster / better:
Racing tires are not so good and can cause slippery behaviours in certain or many environment. The tire is manufactured to stick to the racing tracks despite the high speed of the bike but not manufactured taking into consideration the type of paths or roadways in your locality. It is better to stick to the recommended or the type of tire which is manufactured for the bike.
7. Automobile give you room to go ahead:
They only give you room so you don't bug them apart from that here is no other reason. In many lonely roadways and highways it is important to stick to your lane and maintain a balance as well as speed as any slight error from the automobile can cause you and your bike more damage than the automobile. Be very cautious when riding close to an automobile as it is already on four legs and you have none.
8. Couple of drinks will not affect your riding:
The idea is similar to jumping off 10 feet to check whether it hurts or not, it is obvious it will hurt similarly it is very dangerous to get intoxicated before a ride as if you are caught up in some accident can cause your body to be less responsive and attentive in decision making.
9. YOU’RE SAFER ON THE STREET THAN ON THE Highway:
Every street, path, highway, roadway...etc is equally dangerous.
10. You cannot get into an accident because you drive safe:
You might be in charge of riding your own bike but you do not control the steering of the automobile riding next to you.
11. Age is directly related to cause of accident:
In an accident the natural laws of physics, damage and accidents do not make any exempt when it comes to age.
12. MOST ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED BY automobile DRIVERS:

13. A SKILLED RIDER CAN HANDLE ALMOST ANY SITUATION:
Skills are not correlated to handling a bike. An expert can get into an accident because the time, situation, environment and other factors play a role in your ride.
14. Use of high octane fuel increases a bike’s performance:
None of the studies, research or experiments have proven this. It is recommended to clean your carburettor and petrol tank every 6 months or a year if you are using regular petrol other than that you are fine.
15. Lay down a motorcycle if you going to crash:
It's a strict no, although there is a strong frame to protect during the crash it is recommended to leave your bike and jump in a rolling motion to reduce the impact of speed.
16. Do not think twice. Your dream bike should be your first bike:
It would be recommended to buy an average bike or even a second hand bike 2 to 3 years before buying your dream bike as you will understand a lot of things about the bike and you can sell the bike when you are ready to apply your knowledge on your dream bike.
17. Avoid using the front brakes if you are a rookie:
Both brake should be applied together for spontaneous breaking. Practice braking together or make it a practise of using both break simultaneously as it is the best and proven method to bring the bike at instant halt without falling off.
18. You can go touring on any motorcycle:
The bikes which are used for touring should be touring bikes as they give you comfort during a long journey. A bike not designed for touring can cause you severe back pains, stress and other problems which can result into some other catastrophe.
19. Loud Exhaust cause less accidents:
No, none of the study has found this.
20. Bikers Only Wear Leather Because It Looks Cool:
It is a safety mechanism from small flying identified objects. The weather also gives you some warmth in the cool wind.
