Measures and Materials to be taken before a long ride
Before the ride:
1. Riding gears, accessories and clothes:
Protect yourself from the Sun which can make the ride very tiring. Wear glasses or any other eye wear which protects you from the winds as your eyes are the most important part of your body. Protect your knuckles with rider gloves, your legs with jeans and feet with strong shoes.
2. Proper or more documentation:
Carry your identity, papers or any other required legal documentation of the bike along with you. Documentation and paperwork gives you authenticity and causes the least issues during the ride just in case.
3. Maintain good health and adequate rest:
Maintain good health and take adequate rest before the long ride as it will help you in focusing on the ride and the support which your body will give you when needed will make the journey more joyful.
4. Music, GPS and digital tech:
Many a times riding a bike for long hours can be very boring and stressful. Music can help you calm down and help you focus on the ride. Also carry any other digital devices which you feel can be helpful along with chargers, cables...etc
5. Choose a Smooth riding bike:
You are going to ride for a very extended period of time and most probably on routes which are not maintained to their highest standards. Choosing a bike which is comfortable to be seated and ride will give you an added advantage to make your whole journey seamless.
6. First Aid kit, medicines:
Always carry a first aid kit with you along with some medicines for general purpose.
7. Keep liquid cash:
Many places have problems of ATM or any banking facility hence it is advised to carry a good amount of liquid cash along with you. Also carry cash in the form of change as carrying large notes will be problematic to get exchanged.
8. Carry tools, Ropes, Oil, Spare part...etc
Either the whole group or an individual should carry a rope along with them to tow a bike or for any other use when in need. The basic spares are - accelerator cable, clutch cable, chain link, air filter, spark plug, extra headlamp bulbs, chain lubricant+cleaner, Engine Oil of the grade which is suitable for your bike's engine. If you've a disk brake setup, service it before starting the ride otherwise for wired contraptions, carry a brake wire - you never know when that can snap off.
9. Extra emergency keys
Keep a set of extra keys away from your carriage or other materials as we tend to lose our keys during such situations.
10. Basic Maintenance or General checkup, lights horns..etc
11. Test drive for 30 Minutes before the ride
12. Tyre condition and Pressure
13. Do not drink water or eat more before the ride
14. Plan your route, break and research your ride before hand
15. Always go with a budget and make some friends who can share accommodation
16. Carry less but important items:
There is no need to carry more than necessary items during the ride as the luggage is already a load on you and the bike.
17. Be prepared:
Prepare yourself and understand that you are entering an unknown zone hence a casual attitude won't suffice, you have to be smart, sharp and very creative at times needed.
Measures to be taken during the ride:
1. Follow Signs:
Understand that there are a lot of dangers when travelling a long distance as we may land into some unknown area within no time. It is recommended to look for any signs and understand the various signs and symbols which caution us about the road ahead.
2. Halts:
Take regular halts or break whenever necessary as riding for a long time can cause huge exertion on the body which can hamper the ride and may turn into an accident due to lack of concentration.
3. Checking fuel level:
Check fuel levels regularly whenever necessary as our judgement can sometimes be wrong.
4. Overtaking:
During a long ride try to stay at an average speed and overcome the desire to overtake the other vehicle. More accidents on bike are caused while overtaking or staying besides a heavy vehicle
5. Driving in the Night:
Try to avoid riding during the night as the long rides already lack good roads, enough lights or boundaries. Moreover, there is always a chance that some animal, human or other obstruction can come between your ride which can be devastating for both the rider and the animal or human.
6. Driving in Mountainous terrain:
Be careful while riding in mountainous terrain as we are already under a disadvantage of having 2 wheels over the other vehicles. The vehicles riding on a mountainous terrain are very careless and have little to no consideration about the path of others.
7. Driving through improper roads:
Try to avoid routes which have damaged, improper or irregular roads, it is better off if you take a long route and spend time on the ride rather getting your tyre punctured or cause damage to the bike during the long ride. Avoid routes where there is excessive road construction or maintenance, avoid narrow roads which pass through dense forests.
8. Eat less every time on or before the ride
9. Do not give a lift to anyone on the road
10. Talk to the locals
